When Jowad’s wife passed away, his life turned upside down. Gradually losing the confidence to leave his house, he became isolated from the world around him.
Jowad luckily had the full support of his son, Daniel. Living together under one roof, their strong relationship helped the pair deal with the loss of a dearly loved mother and wife. Although Jowad had his son to help him, there were still worries playing on his mind. Jowad suffers from vascular disease and underwent two rounds of heart surgery last year. Instead of finding refuge in his own home during his recovery period, he was left feeling cold, unwell and worried about the future. This was because of the broken windows and radiator which made the house unbearably cold. He could not afford to repair them.
“I was really depressed. The house was absolutely freezing, and it was really affecting my health. I didn’t want to ask for help because I like to be independent and do things for myself. But I really couldn’t afford to fix the problem and I didn’t know what to do.”
Jowad’s late wife Barbara, worked for the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs within the Civil Service for over 20 years. Our team doesn’t just support present and former civil servants, but also their immediate families when we are able to. Although Jowad was apprehensive about getting in touch, he soon discovered that it was the right thing to do. In certain cases like Jowad’s, where the lack of property maintenance is majorly affecting someone’s health, we can step in. We paid towards the repairs Jowad so desperately needed to feel comfortable and safe in his own home.
“To tell you the truth, the Charity has helped me relax. My wife’s death destroyed me, and I have not gained my confidence back yet. You helped me in a difficult time when I had a lot of worries. Thank you so much.”
Jowad is now finding his health conditions more manageable and is slowly working towards facing the world again one step at a time. We are glad to have made this journey a little easier for a valued member of our long-life community.
