Ask for a Carer’s Assessment
Carers are legally entitled to an assessment of their own needs. This is an opportunity to talk about the impact being a carer has on your own life and things that might make it easier for you.

By seeing your GP and informing them of your caring role a lot of support can be opened up to you.
All too often carers are so preoccupied with the health and wellbeing of the person they are caring for, their own needs take a back seat.
However, by carers paying more attention to themselves it is very positive for both them and the person they're looking after.
Prepare for an emergency
Knowing that replacement care will be available should something happen to you provides an enormous amount of peace of mind.
In some areas there are emergency card schemes that have been set up for carers. These might be called: a Carer's Card Scheme, a Carer’s Emergency Card or an Emergency Care Scheme.
Carers register and draw up their emergency plan which is then held by a 24-hour response service. In the event of something happening to you, the card would be found and the emergency care plan implemented.

Contact your Carers' Centre
Being a carer can be isolating and demanding and you may feel you want to talk to someone about it. You may have questions about rights, entitlements or services which you have never needed to know about before.
There are local carers’ centres across the country providing advice, information and support for carers.

Take a break
We understand that getting time away from a caring role is not always easy. However, it is important for your health and wellbeing.
It is also important to take regular breaks during the day from your caring responsibilities, even if it is just 30 minutes each day.
Remember that you both need someone else to talk to. Relationships can be put under strain due to the extra responsibilities both parties can face.
